We left Friday morning and drove to a little town outside of Lawton called Medicine Park, where we would eventually stay the night, and then set out to explore part of the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge. We started by going up Mt. Scott.
Mt. Scott is the second largest mountain in the Wichita mnts with a summit at the staggering height of 2,400ft above sea level. Okay so its not so impressive but when you're coming from an elevation of ~760 ft its kind of high. So we drove up the mountain and took some pictures of the vistas and laughed at the flat landers talking about how high it was and how they were scared they were going to fall down the mountain. It was pretty funny. Then we explored a little bit of the refuge and saw some wild longhorn cattle, buffalo, and big fat prairie dogs.
Inside of the refuge is The Holy City of the Wichitas. In the 1930s the WPA built the first buildings representing different structures from the Bible. It was kind of interesting and reminded me why Oklahoma is sometimes called the buckle of the Bible belt.
On Saturday we took advantage of the beautiful weather and went hiking in the refuge. We bundled up Carter (it was windy) and hiked the ~2mile Long Horn trail. It was a beautiful day and we loved being outside. Carter channeled his inner bear and growled the entire hike and loved every minute of it. Lilly loves being outside and is becoming quite the hiker too. They are both definitely Brown kids. It was a fun trip and we didn't want to come home but I guess we had to get back to "real" life. I definitely wouldn't mind going back.
