Trip to Las Cruces

Because of our impending move to Las Cruces, New Mexico so Nate can attend graduate school at NMSU (public history program), we recently went on a trip to Las Cruces to check it out. The drive down was long, but we finally arrived in Bloomfield, NM (just outside of Farmington) and spent the night. The next day we arrived in Las Cruces, and we must say, we like it. The weather was perfect, and we were not looking forward to returning to cold, windy, and snowy Idaho. Thursday night we went to Mesilla, an old Mexican village near Las Cruces. We spent some time in the plaza, then ate at La Posta, a Mexican restaurant located in a building that is part of the original township of Mesilla. The food was good, but not as good as we had expected. We will have to try it again after we move down. Across the street from La Posta is a building that once housed the capital of the Arizona and New Mexico territories. It also served as the courthouse for Mesilla, and was where Billy the Kid was tried for murder and sentenced to death by hanging. (He was transported to Lincoln and later escaped before being shot by Pat Garrett). It was pretty cool to be in buildings that once housed figures such as Billy the Kid, Pat Garrett, Kit Carson, etc. The rest of our time in Las Cruces was spent checking out the city, visiting the NMSU campus, etc., just trying to get a feel for our future home. We are excited to move and begin a new chapter in our lives.
